Crafty Halloween

I love Halloween. I love making stuff. I love the creativity that comes out with people. I love candy. I love zombies. I love horror movies. What more can I say? When friend, Kate, decided to have a bunch of crafty girls get together, I thought it was the perfect time to try out a Halloween craft. Here's my candy craft.

Hammy is a BUTTON!

My tribute painting to my hamster (R.I.P.) Hammy has been turned into a button. Tanya Madoff runs a super cool button club out of San Francisco. Check out her blog and join her nifty button club that features an artist each month.

I like how the buttons really make him look like he's running in a ball! Thanks Tanya!

I haven't been doing much creative stuff lately because I finally repainted my studio/guest room/makeup space. It is Benjamin Moore Dijon. A buttery, warm, mustard-y, gold. Now I have no excuses and should get back to it!

Here's a recent painting I did for a girl who is a huge fan of The Big Lebowski. In the usual style of work I've been doing, but not the typical subject matter. It was a fun challenge and funny to do!

My artist and friend Kate had a residency at Art Central in November. She did a series of "awkward birthday photos". I had one, she painted me. It now proudly hangs in my living room. I haven't changed a bit!

Minneapolis, Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas, 30" x 30"

Here's the painting I made for my brother for Christmas (so Happy Christmas, Adam, if you see this before I get to give it to you). I wanted to photograph it before I unstretched it. I used old Playboy magazines and color TV circuit board diagrams as that "little something extra" in this painting. I really enjoy mixing media. Even some of the buildings are pieces of canvas sewn onto together.

The buildings are loosely based on the Minneapolis skyline, to where my brother recently moved. And yes, that IS the man with the golden gun.

An older painting I did on a whim. I've started back-tracking to styles I used to work in back in art school. I got out my oil paints the other day, set up shop in my dining room and got working on some new, big, messy, abstract paintings. I'm excited about the work in progress, stay tuned for photos.

Hammy in the Ball

Not really sure why, but my hamster sure likes running in his plastic ball. I can't imagine that he can see much of anything and that's probably why he runs full-force into walls. He jumps right in when I put the ball up to the door to his cage, so he must find some fun in it. It's also pretty funny to watch the little mouse run around my house, hence my homage to Hammy.

Mountain Sheep

Mountain sheep are everywhere in the mountains...duh..I suppose that's why they are called mountain sheep and not prairie sheep or ocean sheep. I saw a lot of them this summer and I like sheep (see previous painting). But these sheep are like evil sheep. They aren't fluffy and cute, they actually have yellow eyes and like to eat rocks.

And another older one...I joke that I should submit this one to the Calgary Stampede art show. They love horse paintings there. I suppose that's why I painted horses. You can't NOT paint horses when you live in Calgary. It ain't called Cowtown for nuttin'.

Guard Doggy

I painted this dog immediately after our apartment was broken into and all of our good stuff was stolen. He hangs in the entrance to our apartment so anyone who walks in, unless they are invited in, are going to be really scared by this painting. They will also see Steve's target he shot at when he went to the shooting range with his friend, no head or heart shots, so an intruder will die a slow, painful death upon entering our house.

Willing to make other guard dogs for people who feel they need a little extra protection in their homes. No clean-up, non-shedding, easy-to-care.

Sheep

I've finally had some time to not only update my blog, but actually paint some pretty pictures too. The Sheep is my latest. I'm trying to combine my older style of very painterly, abstract figures, to work with my newer style of flat, nutty landscapes. I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. I used some sand and texturing in the paint which gave a little something special to the sheep.

Not sure why I chose sheep as a subject, I just really like them. They are fuzzy with really hard heads and their fur is greasy.

Bah.

I thought it might be fun to have a blog dedicated to my art. I hope to keep it updated with photos of what I'm working on and it'll keep me motivated to keep making some art. It's no fun to create art when you don't have an audience.
